A Cloudy Morning at Clovelly Beach

My first blog post is all about my latest photo outing: Clovelly Beach in Sydney.

Last Sunday, I finally managed to spend a couple of hours at this location. It had been on my list for a while, but I had never been there before.
As I usually do during my photo sessions, I arrived nearly an hour before sunrise—not only to scout for shooting spots but also to enjoy the beauty and calm of the ocean at that time of day.

Lately, I had been getting clear, cloudless skies during my outings—far from ideal for the kind of photos I want to take. But this time, I was finally welcomed by a beautifully overcast sky, just perfect for the long exposure shots I had in mind. No harsh sunlight to deal with—just soft, even light.

As the first light of dawn appeared, I started shooting. The light was still soft enough that I didn’t need to use any ND filters. And thanks to the cloud cover, everything was lit evenly, just the way I like it.

The cliffs to the left of Clovelly Beach offer plenty of interesting viewpoints over the ocean and the rock formations below. The cliffs themselves were also fascinating to photograph, thanks to the unique shapes of the rocks.

Between shots, I also did a couple of field recordings of the surrounding environment. It’s something I really enjoy doing—not just to use the audio in future videos, but also to connect more deeply with the natural sounds of the place.

The cloudy sky I had been waiting for gave me some great photo opportunities—but as expected, it also brought rain. I had to leave earlier than planned, so I didn’t get the chance to shoot with longer focal lengths and capture some details I had in mind. That’ll be for the next outing!
